In New York you can eat, drink and dance whenever-wherever. Even though that’s a total perk of living here, you can probably imagine that a break from all the noise is crucial. People run off to the Hamptons, upstate or national parks to escape New York’s hustle. And me? I walk. Shades on, camera on, coffee grabbed and you might be surprised there’s a lot of quietness to find in the city of never-ending movement. A very pretty walk is the one to Bleecker Street – West Village. Any route, any street, you choose to get here will probably be good. But, in my opinion, these are absolutely the ones you shouldn’t miss:
W 11TH STREET
Enter at the cross point of 7th Ave. and 11tth. Don’t be scared of the crazy super huge sexshop on the corner, because this is one serene and adorable street. From this point on, you’ll be walking underneath an arch of trees and see the most beautiful houses – of lot of them owned by the rich and famous – with the familiar step-gables. For a brunch-break, stop at Tartine . Outside tables-for-two, eggs Benedicte and nice staff.
BANK AND W4TH
Make a right as soon as you hit Tartine on 11th. Here’s Bank and W4th. Besides being so pretty – tree arches, idyllic houses – it’s also the beginning of the Marc Jacobs Imperium. This guy has a gazillion shops in this district: Baby Marc, Marc by Marc, Book Marc, Make-up Mark..and so on. He definitely rules the Village starting with Marc by Marc across from baby Marc at Bank and W4th.
Return to W11th and walk West. With every step you take, the bigger the chance of a sugar sweet inhalation coming from the first Magnolia Bakery – opened in 1996 – at Bleecker street. You cannot pass this bakery without some pastry. So, first treat yourself with a cupcake – they also have mini’s – or a cake – my favorite is the vanilla with party sprinkles – cross the street and sit down at Bleecker playground. Another idyllic spot of this neighborhood, where I’ve spotted the cutest sisters in a stroller
After sugar, go and explore Bleecker. I absolutely find this part of Bleecker the best. Colourful houses, a green bike lane and the best shops: from Zadig&Volaire, Intermix and Jimmy Choo to MAC, Steve Madden and small boutiques. Oh, and a cool thing to do here: the Marc by Marc Photoboot. Fun and free! Find it across from the Bleecker playground.
While walking on Bleecker, don’t miss the amazing side streets. In particular: Perry street. You’ll immediately notice the blue tiled doorframe. The contrast of the blue tiles and the deep red wall is amazing. Also, walk a little bit further and on your right side, you will see the coolest red door accompanied by the coolest red tree.
